Why DIY Baby Powder?
Just because it says it is for babies, doesn’t mean it is safe! Most store-bought baby powders are filled with toxic ingredients. Since it is not banned in the US, some baby powder manufacturers still use talcum powder in their products. Talc can be contaminated with asbestos which is known to cause cancer.
Along with every type of body products, soaps, lotions, shampoos, conditioners, candles, etc. baby powder is also quite often made with artificial fragrance. Fragrance is an EDC (Endocrine-Disrupting Chemical). These types of chemicals can mimic, block, or interfere with your body’s natural hormones. By doing this they can cause all kinds of detrimental health consequences like fertility issues, cancer, diabetes, respiratory problems and many others. Along with fragrance, a few other examples of EDC’s are BPA, Parabens, and Phthalates. There are many more and they are in so many things. So please do your own research and avoid them at all costs! Here is one source of a little more info about EDC’s.
Another reason to avoid things that have fragrance is if you have pets in the home. Candles, glade plug-ins, fake essential oils, and perfumes can cause major respiratory issues and other health problems especially in small dogs, cats and children. This is also why I ONLY use 100% Pure essential oils.

Arrowroot Powder
Arrowroot powder is great for absorbing moisture and very gentle on the skin! I prefer to use arrowroot powder for this baby powder recipe, but some organic, non-GMO cornstarch will work too.

Non-Nano Zinc Oxide
I use zinc in this recipe because it is a great skin protectant. Non-Nano just means that they are big enough particles that it won’t penetrate the skin or clog the pores. Zinc is really good at creating a barrier on the skin to protect it from anything sitting against it, like in a diaper.

Kaolin Clay Powder
I love Kaolin Clay for this recipe because it is so gentle on the skin. It helps absorb excess oils and keeps pores unclogged while also soothing irritated skin. Bentonite clay is a good substitution for this if needed, but I have read that Kaolin Clay is a little more gentle and may be a better choice for the MOST sensitive skin. I have used both without any issues.

Aloe Vera Powder
Who knew that Aloe Vera came in powder form?! I like to use Aloe powder in this DIY baby powder recipe because of it’s moisturizing, soothing and anti-inflammatory properties for sore little bums.

Essential Oils
I usually use Lavender essential oil for this recipe because it is so gentle on delicate tiny human skin. Lavender also has massive benefits for the skin such as being anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antimicrobial and detoxifying. It can also help soothe and calm the skin while reducing redness and healing rashes.
There are many other oils that would work great if you don’t have any lavender. I would also be perfectly comfortable using Gentle Baby Young Living blend, Seedlings Calm Young Living blend, Geranium, or Frankincense.

Directions for DIY Baby Powder
Just mix all the ingredients together in a bowl with a with a whisk. If it is a little clumpy, you can send it through a sifter before putting it in your shaker container. Fill up your jar and put your shaker lid on, then you’re all set!

Shaker Jar
I like using a mason jar with a shaker lid, but you really can put the powder in any shaker that won’t get clogged. I have used old baby powder bottles too. I think something like this powder sugar shaker might work well too.
